C1840 American Turned Wood Cigar Spice Or Tea Box. Paint. J Willard

For sale is a wonderful 19th Century circa 1840 small turned American cigar box, spice box or tea caddy box. We are not quite sure what this box was used or made for. It does not smell of tobacco inside or tea. It could be a trinket box of some type. It came from a private collection of antique New York State items from an estate in Columbia County of upstate New York.
The box has a wonderful old paint surface which appears to be original. There is possibly an undercoat of a diffe...rent color but we believe this paint coat was applied prior to the maker adding the owners name of "J.Willard" in block letter and then finishing it in what looks like a dark gray-ish green color. The paint has oxidized lovely with age and it appears almost as a slate gray with undertones.
The fitted lid top also has a spectacular, still intact, finger finial. These pieces are almost always broken off through age and it is a wonderful attribution to this piece that it has survived such a long period of time.
The lid top fits very very tightly to the base. We believe the interior is so clean because this top is probably never taken off. It is very hard to remove. Certainly a slight shape warping from age as to why the base and top fits so tightly.
Overall the box is in lovely and very good structural condition. Please see all detailed pictures as they are a very important part of our description.
