Large, heavy, and unusual merchant's box with carved and polished ribbed sides in a beadboard pattern and brass handles. Interior has a removable tray of small compartments with doors and a large opening in the bottom. Base and large lid are secured with brass and a lock. Dutch or Colonial Indonesian in the early to mid 19th century. Once used by a pearl merchant to sort, string, and sell pearls. Comes with a small spool of white thread, remnants from its former use. Varying sizes... of ridges on interior allowed for lining up and stringing pearls. We purchased this in Amsterdam.In good to fair condition. Exterior shows very little wear or fading and is in excellent condition. Interior trays and flaps shows signs of use and repair. Left interior door appears to have been replaced. Handles on interior doors have been replaced, are loose, or are missing. Verdigris on the interior metal. Interior tray main structure is sturdy, as are the hinges on the exterior lid.
