Six Old Clay Tobacco Smoking Pipes
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:18256934 | Country/Region of Manufacture: Unknown |
Type: Pipes | Material: Clay |
Pipe 1: This is a relatively short pipe with the bowl me being approximately 4.5cm in height and the stem 8cm. This has an area beneath the bowl which would suggest a heel or spur has broken off. There is an imprint of a maker's mark or maker's location on the stem but we cannot decipher this.
Pipe 2: This has an Irish theme with an Irish harp on ...one side of the bowl and a three-leaf shamrock on the other side. It has a crack on the stem and the heel/spur may be truncated. The bowl is approximately 4cm high and the stem 9.5cm long.
Pipe 3: Has an inscription on both sides of the stem which says (we think) 'THE WORKMAN'. The bowl is approximately 4cm high and the stem 8cm in length. The spur/heel may be truncated.
Pipe 4: This pipe is chunky with the word 'SCOTLAND' embossed on one side of the stem. Just to the right of 'SCOTLAND' it looks as if someone has scratched their initials on the stem. It might be AB but it is difficult to be sure. There is a flake missing on the front of the bowl and the pipe is heavily scored on one side of the stem. The bowl is 4cm in height and the stem 7.5cm in length.
Pipe 5: This one is short and has a textured, 'crinkley' pattern on the bowl and half the stem. The bowl in 4cm in height and the stem 7.5cm.
Pipe 6: This is the pipe with the tallest bowl and longest stem. The bowl has a vertical stripey effect down the sides and the spur as a makers imprint on it which looks like double 'o' and a lower case g on its side. However, some of these makers' marks were symbols rather than letters so these may not be letters of the alphabet. The bowl is 5cm in height and the stem is 11cm long. We believe the stem has been broken off and, therefore, would have been longer originally. We believe this may be the oldest pipe of the set and could date to the latter part of the 18th Century or early 19th Century.
All of them as mentioned in the condition report, are stained and marked in various ways, but this really adds to their charm and gives a patina to some of them which makes them truly unique.
Together the pipes weigh 195g.
