Few vintage records will ever be perfectly flat, any issues with significant movement or tracking will be mentioned in detail if applicable. Lateral Movement (Side-to-Side): Barely a Trace. Weight of this Record: 149 grams. The heaviest example of this album I have held, this somewhat above average for label and title.Country of Manufacture: EnglandRarity: Early-pressed copies are moderately scarce. A little-known band when issued, this album charted twice in the UK, but failed to break into the top 20 with first issues peaking at 47. Early copies had a limited run-out scratched dead wax area message of ‘KIP-HUGGYPOO-KISSY’ and ‘AGAIN!’ as this copy includes (as-seen in the close-up pictures), these are rarer. This quickly changed to ‘BLAIR RULES’ and ‘BLAIR’ on subsequent pressings which are far more commonly seen.Original Year of Release: 1973Matrix Nos: YAX 4623-3U / YAX 4624-3UMothers / Stampers: 3 HO / 2 OHRun-Out Groove Etchings: ‘KIP-HUGGYPOO-KISSY’ / ‘AGAIN!’Musicians: Freddie Mercury – lead vocals, piano, Hammond organ, backing vocals; Brian May – guitars, piano, backing vocals; Roger Taylor – drums, percussion, lead vocals, backing vocals; John Deacon – bass guitar.Brief Info: The debut Queen album when they had a far more ‘progressive’ sound. Little known until an appearance on BBC TV’s ‘Old Grey Whistle Test’, where their performance of ‘Liar’ that opens side two remains memorable. So-much-so, I bought a copy of the album on issue. A brilliant introduction to this then new band and amazing vocalist Freddie Mercury. Selling modestly at first, but picking up as later albums drew considerable attention and new fans. This an impressive early copy with a lovely, hardly worn cover – that difficult and unusual to find – the record appears little played with impressive clean sound with little unwanted. As became their trademark, superbly produced with full-on dynamic sound. The short bass guitar solo on ‘Liar’ has to be one of the finest short ones ever recorded. A copy with the rarer run-out groove messages, this one many collectors will enjoy owning.Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single unlaminated with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd, includes the Trident Audo Production text and EMI detail inner sleeve. Also has text on spine and top edges.Cover Front: A superb deeply coloured front with little to fault at all. Clean, fresh, unfaded with no sticker tears and hardly rubbed or creased. A very faint rim impression-rub trace near the bottom edge, which for a dark thin-card inner with a thick heavy record inside for around 46 years, is minuscule. Few can hope to have fewer blemishes, cover-protection has ensured this has hardly aged or worn.Cover Back: Virtually the same, a superb clean back to complement the very impressive front. Not seen a better matt example in years.Top Edge: Immaculate, the white text pristine, the surface straight without rubbing or fading as seen in my top view picture.Bottom Edge: Again straight with any rubbing very patchy, gentle and light. Few dark storage edges will have less.Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and mostly very sharp with barely any hint of thickening. This made with very thin card and again, will rarely be seen better. The record enters here and is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.Spine and Text: Again very impressive and unusually clean and fresh. So many, if not most, get rubbed and eroded over time. Solid, straight with barely any compression, the surface barely rubbed at all with all text unworn and nicely centred for extra good look. Slight natural surface crinkle being critical here-and-there.Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light with superb better than excellent shape retained with no knocks or dinks.Cover Summary: A superb age-defying all-round example of this unforgiving dark cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a plain white solid unlined text inner with EMI text. Mildly discoloured with age, but minimal creasing and no edge splits or repairs. Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better, a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic debut album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, generally a clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises bar a milli-second trace on ‘Liar’, blink and miss it. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been impressively stored, within a protective cover and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Little at all spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record, the odd gentle contact trace sound is almost the very least to be expected on this challenging and complex album. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.I am one of the most established sellers on Ebay, trading since 2001 and offering the finest records I can find. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
