Click images to enlarge Description For Auction:Here we have a great little Charles Raymond Hand Cranked Chain Stitch Sewing Machine dated from around the 1860's. Hand painted in ornate gold and red floral design. These mechanism in these machines were cutting edge at the time. No distinguishing makers' marks on the machine except for US Pat July 30 1861 on one side of the feeder/Needle Plate (The date of Patent no 32, 925) which Charles Raymond filed to protect his design. Whilst I am sure that this is a Raymond machine. Strangely on the other side of the plate 'E. H. Arms' is stamped. Edwin H. Arms was the treasurer and secretary of the Arms and Worswick Sewing Machine Company. A company who's site Raymond purchased after a fire in his original wooden factory. Whether they collaborated in the design or what the connection was I have no idea. The patent stamp and the Arms name have a different type face.
Condition: The cosmetic condition is reasonably good, a few places where the enamelled coating has chipped off, and some rubbing to the gold paint in places. The metal is discouloured, but has had a rub and would be further improved by more elbow grease being applied.
There was a needle present and had a poor attempt at testing, but was enough to establish with some recalibration and the proper linen thread the machine would function as it should.Please see photos for overall condition and completeness. Sold as per photos.
