Mattel Fanner 50 Cap Pistol, Second Version No. 603 Mattel Inc. Made in USA. Introduced in 1958. Die-cast metal with plastic grips & cylinder. Approx. 10-1/2” long.Mattel first introduced this die-cast metal cap pistol known as the “Fanner 50” in 1957. The first version fired perforated roll caps and had a sectioned revolving cylinder that didn’t load bullets. This is the second version of the Fanner 50 that was introduced in 1958.... It also fired perforated roll caps but had a revolving cylinder that introduced the “New Bullet-Loading Action”, which was simply a ring in the cylinder with places for 6 play bullets (bullets are not included in this auction but can easily be found on eBay). These bullets were imitation brass ( called “Play Bullets” by Mattel) and only meant for play realism. They don’t shoot out of the gun (that’s the Shootin’ Shell Fanner, which is a different gun from this Fanner 50). This gun fires perforated roll caps such as the Mattel Greenie Roll Caps or Kilgore Perforated Roll Caps. They load into a chamber under the cap wheel on the left side and are drawn out of the gun, as fired, by the cap wheel and out of a slot on the right side. NO CAPS are included in this auction!! They violate eBay rules (and cause tooth decay and civil unrest)!This gun has been lightly fired but still WORKS quite well. The cylinder revolves and the hammer falls with each trigger pull. The bright silver finish has some minor spots of missing finish (mostly around the hammer and cap door) but is still bright. The gold cylinder (actually plastic) has discolored a bit with some scuffs from age but has no cracks or breaks. The imitation “stag” plastic grips are clean with no cracks or holes. The cap door still has it’s spring and stays shut. The cap wheel and hammer show only very minor cap wear and no corrosion. Inside mechanisms are very clean.. This gun will make an excellent addition to any Mattel or cowboy cap gun collection.Very Good Condition. References: Backyard Buckaroos/Collecting Western Toy Guns, J. Schleyer, 1996.
