Vintage C. 1920 ' S Oil Painting Clippership In Rough Seas " T. Bailey " - Wm. Paskel
Item History & Price
the painting which measures a generous 18" x 22" sight size was done c.1920's by a very capable artist who was probably well-listed artist William Paskell, but, who signed the painting as "T.Bailey" - Paskell signed his paintings frequently this way as he was creating lots of clipper-ship type paintings at the time under his real name, & distributing the paintings all around the Boston area - but, he was fearful that if he "flooded" the area with paintings with his signature, that the price/value of his works would be depressed by the theory of "supply & demand"- many times, his paintings signed under the "T. Bailey" pseudonom were distributed around Boston & the North Shore by another person named Morris Hambro - there were a few other artists who also had their works signed under the "T. Bailey" pseudonom & distributed around the Boston area, but, those paintings were of inferior quality -
this painting is a visual delight for anybody interested in owning a marine painting depicting a 19th century clipper-ship with its fully rigged sails billowing out before a strong wind & cutting through white-capped rough seas - the artist has created this stormy scene using darkened greens & whites of the ocean in the foreground juxtaposed against the dark blue & gray & dark white colors of the stormy sky in the background - the stormy atmosphere is further heightened by the artist's usage of the thick full brush strokes of the ocean & threatening clouds in the sky -
the large light oak ornate frame is a c.1980's replacement for this painting, but, it greatly enhances the dramatic clipper-ship ocean scene shown in this painting with its depth & triple levels of framework - the frame measures 22" x 27" -
