Eagle motif Japanese embossed and colored leather tobacco ormoney pouch, Meiji era ca 1900, with silver kagamibuta netsuke and ojime. The leather front and back are embossed with a realisticportrayal of a large bird of prey, probably an eagle. The golden eagle and thesea eagle are the largest Japanese eagles. In Japanese culture, the main mythologicalrepresentation of eagles is Tengu, a monster human-bird modeled on an eagle and, given its mountaindwelling habits, perhaps ins...pired by the golden eagle. Tengu is described as abipedal creature with a long nose-beak, wings and a fan with 12 wooden ribs, resembling tail feathers, though it is sometimes illustrated as far morehuman-like than bird-like. Mischievous and powerful, Tengu is mainly theprotector of the mountains, is able to foretell the future, creates winds, andmay attack people who try to harm the mountain landscape. The pouch has a silver lock plate kanemono (clasp)that is a portrait of a dragon pursuing the flaming pearl. The sagemonoensemble is attached to the kagamibuta netsuke with 10 fine silver plated metalchains and a silver dragon-motif ojime (which does not move). The metal lid ofthe netsuke also depicts a dragon pursuing the flaming pearl of wisdom, associatedwith the tides.Dimensions: 5 x 3.375"
