Original Description:
Offered here is fine and rare 1-gallon merchant crock bearingthe mark, “H.C. FONTAINE/MARCH [sic] AND GENERAL/COATICOOKE” from Coaticook, Quebec, Canada. This is the mark of merchant, Henri Clovis Fontaine, who arrived in Coaticook in 1890. Coaticook is a small town just north of theQuebec/Vermont boarder and in 1890 must have been quite a rural location. This crock features a rich and glossy Albanyslip glaze. I measures approximately 8”tall with a base di...ameter of 7”. Included with the crock is a perfectly fittinglid. This lid may or may not be theoriginal. Overall this crock is inexcellent condition for its age with only minor use wear, two small nicks in thebase (see photo), and the residue of some old black paint in places. The lid has a single chip. Four Velcro pads arepresent on the base. This little crockwould make a fine addition to any serious collection of Canadian stoneware! Contact mewith any question.
