Antique Folk Art Wooden Articulated Toy Boy Riding A Horse - Movable Pull Japan
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:185798 |
While we don't typically buy and sell primitives, this sweet boy riding a horse or donkey just had to come home with us. The toy is of unknown (to us) origin, however based on the round shape of the boy's head, the paint detailing on his face, and the marks on the ...bottom which read "(F)OREIGN" and 1/11, we believe that it may be of Japanese origin, probably from the late 1940's.
What's really cool is that the toy is movable. When set on the floor or tabletop, the wheels roll, and while rolling, the boy's arms go up and down and the donkey's head goes up and down. The donkey's ears are made of leather. As one can tell from the pictures, the toy does have considerable cosmetic wear from age and being well loved and played with long ago. In spite of the finish wear and cracks in the wood, the toy moves as it should and has a wonderful display quality. Please enlarge all images to see details.
