Antique Leather - Cutting Knife/Tool By Osborne & Co, W Hand - Made Leather Sheath
Item History & Price
The pattern of this leather cutting knife is a very old. The tool was made by the Company of C. S. Osborne of Newark, New Jersey, founded on 1829 as is stated in the marking impressed on the blade (see photos). The sheath that comes with the knife was made by the original owner, who lived in the North West corner of Minnesota.
The knife is elegantly made.  ...;The blade is solidly affixed to the handle, which is made of sound hardwood and topped with a brass collar and pin. The blade is still sharp. There is a little rust at the connecting point where the blade meets the handle; also there is a surface spot on the wing of one side of the blade. It can be removed by cleaning.
One side of the steel blade, on the bottom where it meets the handle, has the circular mark of the manufacturer: "C.S. Osborne & Co., Newark N J" surrounding "EST'D 182[9?]." This stamp is finished off at the bottom with a five-pointed star. The knife's handmade sheath appears to be missing its top that connected the sheath to a belt. It looks as though it was torn off. The sheath is made of thick leather and has seen much use. It still serves to protect from the razor-sharp blade.
