Presented is a superb quality kapala ritual offering vessel. We believe this is
an early 1900s piece, but as the kapala form has been in use for for at least
several centuries, likely over a thousand years, it's hard to date exactly. It
could be a more modern piece, or it could go back as far as the late 1800s.
Whatever the case, this is a fantastic piece, skillfully made with la...vish
attention to detail.
Kapala is Sanskrit (borrowed into Tibetan) for 'skull' and that is exactly
the form the kapala takes. The kapala is a skull-cup ritual vessel for making
offerings, often of alcohol or bread, standing in for blood and flesh. The
vessel is essentially a box, beautifully cast and hand engraved with the
stylized skull design and intricate designs of grinning faces and Sanskrit
letters. The vessel is brass, with a vibrant gold color on the exterior and dark
unfinished metal on the interior.
This piece is in excellent condition. The metal has a lovely patina of age,
but it could easily be polished/cleaned up. The interior of the kapala is a rich
dark brown, unfinished/unpolished metal.
The kapala measures about 4 by 3.5 by 4.5 inches, LxWxH.
The kapala weighs 1013.5 grams or 2.23 pounds.
