Colonial Or Earlier Double Betty Lamp Hand Forged Narricissus Flower Iron Tinned
Item History & Price
Well I know the Besser, German for better or Betty lamps were even on the May Flower in 1620. Burning bits of fat or fish oil such as Cod. Things didn't change much until they went to a tube and wick when Whale oil came in. Which pretty much eliminated the old iron Betty lamps. Ben Franklin made whale oil more popular by inventing the first really practicable burner with 2 wicks in 2 tu...bes, brighter and cleaner. Not so good for the Whales though! Modernstyle Bettys are usually fueled with Olive oil. This appears to have it's surfaced tinned, Tin came from England so this looks like it is an earlier one. The rarer ones have birds or flowers hand forge into the design. Looks to be a pair of Narcissus in bloom, which is a flower from north America, the Daffodil is not! and wasn't here till 1733 I've heard.
The Narcissus was symbolic for early settlers as New beginnings and Lent which is about when they bloom. Has adouble pan so when one was empty, they set the other in place so it comes apart. It hangs as well. I'm always amazed when old ones turn up. Fun to collect with all the different styles they made. I've seen the decorated ones go for much more than I'm asking! Overall height is 9.5". Condition is reallygood for it's age, and I've done no cleaning or polishing and is left as found! Each pan has it's own Narcissus making them very unique. Look at the pictures and if you need another shot let me know. Thanks!
