We should begin by saying that we are not experts in locks but that we will describe this piece as well as we can. If there are any mis-statements or errors in this description, please be in touch with us. We will post any constructive comments on this page, so keep your eyes on this site.
This lock was found and given to us at an estate sale in Minneapolis conducted by a reputable organization.  ...;The lock was encased in the wood of the heavy door for which it was used: the piece measures approximately 9.5"x 3" x 1.75." In the pictures above we show how it looked when we acquired it. It appears that someone had been working on the lock, perhaps to modify it, prior to our obtaining it.
To check this model of the lock, we had to split the wood carefully to free it. The split pieces fit back together well.
Once the lock was extracted from the wood, we were able to check the model number inside the lock's front plate; It reads: "T 8702 3/4." The end of the large bolt has the name of the maker: "Lockwood."
The black box that holds the lock mechanism measures roughly: 3 3/4" from the side to the front of the face plate. The long side of the lock measures 5 5/8." The front face plate measures about 7.75". Prior to wrapping for shipping, the piece altogether weighs 3 pounds 2 ounces.
All parts of the lock appear to be present and working. We do not know if the cylinder is the original or one that was meant to replace it. In addition, there is a loose spring inside the lock that the buyer should assign a place in the workings.
This is an entry mortise lock and, judging by its number, one of the best that Lockwood made. During the first half of the twentieth century, Lockwood was known as one of the best lock-making companies in the U. S. A.
We believe this is a rare find.
