Vintage 13" Artist Cloth Ethnic Regional Doll Handmade OOAK by Ilse Ludecke, GermanyMid-Late 1950s "Nadija"? from Yugoslavia, Slavic WomanUnusual--I've not seen this Ilse doll before!
I bought a collection of dolls by the German artist, Ilse Ludecke & am selling them over the next couple of weeks. If they were ever displayed, it wasn't for very long.
Ilse sold dolls after WWII to soldiers stationed in Germany and also..., evidently, to the military commissaries. Her dolls are needle-sculpted, hand-painted and each a bit different, making each a one-of-kind (OOAK). These examples are unsigned but definitely her work: her expressive painted eyes & the construction of her cloth heads are easy to distinguish once you've seen them. Some are signed on the base & some have little type-written stories folded into pockets affixed to the underskirts, but this one doesn't--I don't know why.
Long black hair in braids down back.
A pencil marking on her wooden base says "Nadija" so I am presuming it's her name.
"Nadija" dresses in a pleated, multicolored stripe & floral cotton back skirt; her underskirt, which shows in front, is white cotton with red/wht. crochet lace edging; bright red silk apron trimmed in multicolored braid. Wht. blouse with puffy sleeves also trimmed in crochet. Stiff black bolero vest lined in her back skirt fabric. Darker red/black figured silk headscarf. Red/white striped leggings; handmade leather "upanki"-type shoes. Red/wht/blue bead necklace.
Probably never displayed, clean & bright, A spot of ?glue? on her chin where it appears the lower arm may have been attached, as the arms are up to "tie" her scarf. The silk scarf has some unraveling,
