EXQUISITE ANTIQUE RUSSIAN ICON OUR LADYOF THE SIGN ZNAMENIE ORANTA 19th CENTURY 35.7 X 30.5 cm/14.1 x 12” Offered is an exquisite antique Russian orthodox iconof Our Lady of the Sign (Znamenie) Oranta, 19th century. Theotokos (Motherof God) is facing directly, depicted in half length, with her hands raised inthe orans (praying) position. The image of the Child Jesus depicted within around aureole upon her breast. Theotokos is flanked on the margins by ...aGuardian Angel on the left and St. Helen, Mother of Emperor Constantine on theright. It is hand painted with tempera colors and levkas (gesso) onwooden panel. There are some illegible Cyrillic marked on the back (pictured). Dovetailedinto the back of the board are panel cross members or "back slats"for stability and to prevent warping (pictured). These back slats were used inRussian icons prior to 1880/1890. Subsequent to 1880/1890 advances in materialsnegated the need for these cross members. It is one of the most ancient Christian icons, beingfound in the first-century catacombs where the early Church worshiped secretly.This icon metaphorically depicts the ability of any of us, with the help ofGod, to bring forth something wonderful from within! The term Our Lady of theSign is a reference to the prophecy of Isaiah 7:14: "Therefore the Lordhimself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel". Icons of the Virgin, known as "TheSign", appeared in Russia during the 11th to 12th centuries. The NovgorodZnamenie icon became highly venerated in the Novgorod Republic because of themiraculous deliverance of Novgorod from invasion in the year 1170. Size of icon: 35.7 cm X 30.5 cm X 1.5 cm (14.1 in. X 12.0in. X 0.6 in); weight is 1067 grams (2.4 lbs.). The icon is in excellentcondition. There are tiny cracks on the paint consistent with its age(pictured). Please examine all pictures carefully.
