DESCRIPTION.For your consideration, we have here a fine piece of late 18th century Geor...gian era half-length portrait of a seated lady. The sitter is identified as Elizabeth Clayton, based on the inscription at the upper left corner, which also includes a dating of '1780'. The frame, a thick, solid and unusually heavy antique French piece, is decorated with acanthus leaf motif and has a stunning beauty of its own.
The work is in a very good antique condition. The canvas has been relined, and also possibly restretched, during the nineteenth century. The work displays a very good level of clarity and saturation. A fairly light craquelure runs throughout most areas, along with tiny spotty marks at places.
