Very rare and stunningly beautiful, Pair of ca1890’s Native American Arapaho Indian Bead Decorated Wool Men’s Leggings. These outstanding 19th century Arapaho Leggings measures approx. 32” long and 13” wide at the top edge. The Leggings feature hand, spot stitched bead decorated hide “Blanket Strip” panels that measure approx. 26” long along with cross and circular shaped patterns.
These wonderful, Bead Decorated Trade Cloth Leggings are thread ...and sinew sewn by hand. They are made of a heavy, dark blue wool, Trade Blanket type fabric and trimmed with light blue, satin strips. The attached Blanket Strips are executed using chalk white, light blue, dark blue and yellow colored glass seed beads. The Cross and circular shaped, spot stitched decorations are executed using red white-heart, greasy yellow and dark blue colors. The circular decorations also feature a row of brass “sequin” like elements. The Leggings retains their original wool loops at the top edge and the vertical line of rawhide fringe embellishments.

This very rare and very beautiful, Pair of ca1890’s Arapaho Bead Decorated Leggings are in very good condition and display beautifully. The wool fabric elements are well preserved – generally clean and crisp - soft and supple with scattered, minor surface wear. Each Legging has some wear and fading to the satin border. The bead decoration is beautiful and very well preserved – the hide, Blanket Strips are intact and without bead loss or damage as are the spot stitched beaded decoration elements. All elements of the Leggings are original and there has been no repairs or restorations.
