This is a Really Pretty and Lightly Smoked Peterson's 317 System Standard 3/4 Bent Lightweight Billiard Made in the Republic of Ireland. The System Standard Pipes have changed little since the patent was granted in 1890, with a sump or well beneath the shank airhole to collect tar and moisture and give... a drier sweeter smoke. This was enhanced with the patenting of the p-lip stem in 1898, which allowed much less moisture into the pipe. The briar of this 317 is a light walnut colour with beautiful dense Birdseye and Straight Flame graining, the bowl rim is crisp and un-marked. The nickel plated acorn has a slight dent, the push mount p-lip stem the lightest of tooth chatter. The bowl needed no reaming but was cleansed anyway, the stem was fully sanitised to make the pipe ready to smoke as soon as you receive it, before the whole pipe was lightly polished and waxed to give the Lovely Finish you can see in the photos. The pipe draws and will smoke perfectly, it sits snugly in the hand, light, balanced and so tactile.
