Original Description:
I am splitting the costof shipping with the Winning Bidder who pays a flat rate of $11.50 for USPS Retail Ground shipping.   The higher cost of shipping is due to the much larger, box that is necessary for the 14" Betsy doll and the taller paper doll book in this auction.  The larger,  5 pound package costs about $8.50 more than the box that a notebook and 8" doll needs, so the winning bidder and I split the difference.  Don't miss your opportuni...ty to own this lot WITH the Betsy doll for less than $15.00 over buying the notebook without a doll.
I havehad fun putting together this new issue of my Betsy McCall ResourceNotebook.  The theme of this notebook is ‘The 14” 1951-1953 Ideal BetsyDoll’.  I will underline the areas ofthis notebook that tie the theme together. This Betsy Mc Call Resource Notebook has shown by the previous 123purchases and positive feedbacks that this notebook will be worth yourconsideration.  The addition of the 14”1952-53 Betsy doll makes a great a STARTER SET for those just meeting thislovely doll and also A BONUS for those who have known her since childhood.  Different levels of Betsy collectors willbenefit:   Thebeginning, intermediate and advanced collectors will enjoy readingabout Betsy’s history, see the many different Betsy dolls, friends and relativesproduced by different companies since 1951, plus much more from the firstvintage Betsy dolls and her clothing through the more recently produced McCalldolls by Robert Tonner.  You will alsolearn how to clean the 8” hard plastic Betsy dolls and different methods torepair her ‘issues’ that have appeared over the years along with how to cleanall of the Betsy doll clothes—some will enjoy the opportunity to learn onemethod to organize and catalog your Betsy dolls and her clothing. ALSO, your child or grandchild can haveexperience with collecting, recording, and learning to value a piece of dollhistory.  DOLL:The 14”Betsy McCall doll produced by the Ideal Doll Company from 1952-1954 was thefirst doll made in response to the popularity of the Betsy paper doll which wasintroduced in the McCall’s May 1951 issue. The Ideal Doll Company was licensed to produce the first Betsy McCalldoll.  They used the P-90 hard plasticbody formerly used for their 14” Toni doll. She was sculpted by Bernard Lipfert to McCall's specifications.  This Betsy sold for $7.95 and was produceduntil 1954 and had a hard plastic body, arms and legs with a cotton, stuffedsoft vinyl head with glued-on dark brown saran hair.  She had brown sleep eyes, lashes, and aclosed watermelon grin.  The 14”Ideal Betsy doll in this auction is in played-with condition as evidenced byher combed-out hairstyle and some missing paint on her lower lip. Her hardplastic body is very clean with no stains. The arms and legs are lighter than the torso and could have faded, orjust be from a different dye lot when put together with the torso at thefactory.   The coloring of her vinyl head is differentthan her body because of the different material that was used.  The vinyl may have darkened somewhat overtime, but its color is not unpleasant—the vinyl feels oily, but this issomething that often happens with the old vinyl used on dolls.  The glued-on wig is still thick with a few originalcurls and no missing plugs or bald spots—the bangs may have been trimmed.  Her eyes are clear and her upper lashes arefull.  They need help opening andclosing.  Her stringing is still snug andnot floppy.  The hip ends of her legs andupper ends of her arms have marks where the joints have rubbed.  This Betsy will stand on her own, though astand will be best for her safe display.I have discovered that monitors may show pictures differently thanthose posted from the Seller's computer—even the tilt of the monitor makes adifference.  Therefore, you can rely on the description to be a very goodindication of the condition of this Betsy and use the pictures as a support, realizing that the coloring of this doll may be different than you see on yourmonitor.CLOTHES:Betsy’s clothes are not original for this doll, nor any other ofthe 14” Betsy dolls.  However, the itemsseem to be factory made, are in very good condition and are most likelyvintage.  The shoes are made of black fuzzy material, are side snap Mary Janes with cardboard soles with seperate cardboard heels.  NOTE:  The outfits that weremade by the Ideal Doll Company for this doll are listed in the description ofIdeal’s 14” 1952-1954 Betsy McCall doll in Section B of this Notebook.NOTEBOOK:  *** NOTE:  Find the following references formy Betsy Resource Notebooks in my Feedback on the following dates:  Aug 23, ’19; Aug 8, ’19; Feb 9, ’19; Oct30, ’18; Jul 11, ’18; Apr 12, ’18; Feb 14, ’18; Oct 23, ’17; Aug, ’17; Jul 5, ’17; Apr ’17; Feb. 17, ’17; Nov. 2, ’16; Aug. 2016; May. 2016; Mar. 15, ’16, Jan. ’16; Nov. 18, ’15; Oct 29, ’15; Oct. 13, ’15, Sep 11, ’15; July 31, ’15;Jun 13, ’15, May 23, ‘15, Apr. 29, ’15; Mar 16, ’15; Feb 28, ’15; Dec 11, ’14;Nov 14, ’14; Oct 11, '14; Aug 18, ’14; Jul 26, ’14; Jun18, ’14; Jun 1, ’14; Apr 25, ’14; Feb 20, ’14; Feb. 8, ’14; Oct. 8, ‘13; Aug.22, ‘13; July 15, ‘13; Jun. 8, ‘13; Apr. 11, ‘13; Mar. 17, ‘13; Feb. 20, ‘13;Dec. 7, ‘12; Dec. 4, ‘12; Nov. 2, ‘12; Sep 13, ‘12; Aug15, ‘12; Jun 11, ‘12; Apr. 7, ‘12; Feb. 21, ‘12;Feb. 9, ‘12; Jan 13, ‘12; Jan 6, ‘12; Nov 7, ’11; Oct 20, ’11; Sep 14, ‘11; July29, ‘11; Jun 20, ‘11; Jun 10, ‘11, Apr 27, ‘11; Apr 3, ‘11; Mar 26, ‘11; Mar23, ‘11; Feb 9, ‘11; Jan 12, ‘11; Dec 25, ‘10; Sep 24, ‘10; Sep. 7, ‘10; Jun.6, ‘10; Mar. 20, ‘10; Mar. 15, ‘10; Feb. 13, ‘10; Dec. 30, ‘09; Dec. 21, ‘09;Nov. 11, ‘09;  Sep 23, ‘09;  Jun. 19, ‘09; Feb. 28, ‘09; Feb. 3, ‘09; Dec.4, ‘08; Nov. 11, ‘08; Oct. 31, ‘08; Sept. 19, ‘08; (10 more  but I lostthe feedback dates back to 2007.)  Thisis the 124th book that Ihave created and sold—several have been sold off of eBay—several were specialorders also, so there are no references for them.ThisBetsy adventure begins with a Table of Contents that describes each ofthe 8 sections. Tab A of this auction of a UNIQUERESOURCE NOTEBOOK begins with Betsy McCall—The Paperdoll and HerHistory.  This section iscomprised of the notes I used to present the history and trends of the McCallsMagazine Betsy paper dolls to my Doll Club. Covered are her ancestors, family and friends; description of her home, her activities and family dynamics; Betsy authors and artists; being a vehiclefor advertising; creativity for children through the paper doll; and activitiesand travels.  ALSO, Betsy Mc Call began as a paperdoll in the McCall’s June 1951 magazine and was used to advertise little girl’sfactory-made clothing and clothing from McCall’s sewing patterns.  She quickly became a much-loved andanticipated feature of each magazine! Tab A also contains a list of the titlesof all of the Betsy paper dolls in McCall’s magazines produced from June 1951 –Sept 1995 and other magazines up to 2010.  Some of the vintage and Tonner outfits weremade to match an outfit on a paper doll page. These outfits are listed with the associated paper doll page—perhaps youwill want to display the outfit with the page! There is also a page that lists the dates different mail-in cardboardMcCall’s family paper dolls were produced and several others including paperdolls on Robert Tonner brochures.  For yourfirst paper doll, included is an original pageof the November 1954 paper doll: “Help Betsy McCall find her doll”.  It hasbeen trimmed, is glued to a scrapbook page and had to be folded due to it’ssize.  Not only do you meet the Ideal14” Betsy doll on this page, you see her in the very rare, navy dress w/ redbow, PLUS, you will find 2 dressesthat were produced for the this 1952-1954 Betsy doll.PLUS:Tab B starts with a list of all of the Betsy McCall, Family and Friendsdolls made and licensed by the McCalls Corporation from 1952-2004.  Following this list are descriptions of EACH Betsy doll(plus family and friends), along with pictures of many, created from the firstdoll in 1952.  I added pictures ofmy dolls, and a few with permission, for each description that Icould.   However, I didn't want to infringe on copyright laws, etc.in the Resource Notebooks that I sell, so I didn't copy pictures from theinternet or from reference books to fill in for dolls that I do not own. I have copied pictures from these outlets to complete the descriptions in myown Betsy McCall Resource Book copy.  Feel free to do the same for yourown.   Hopefully this will prove tobe a good resource for you to use in your search for the elusive history of theever-popular Betsy McCall.   PLUS:TabC:  With all of the MANY different outfits (and theirvarious versions) that were made for the American Character 8” – 20” Betsy McCall dolls in the years between 1957-1963, do you ever wonder exactly what youneed to have a complete set and a way to keep track of when they werecomplete?  Included are pages ofeach outfit for the American Character 8”, 14”, and 20” Betsy McCall doll.  These lists have been compiled mostly fromMarci Van Ausdall’s Betsy McCall Guide Book, Lisa Heno’s Betsy’sWardrobe, A Clothing Identification Guide for the 8” Betsy McCall, and alsofrom MIB items seen on e-bay, a couple of rare original items that I havereceived (confirmed by others) and info. from Betsy long-time collectors.  You will receive 10pages with each outfit and every variation along with its stocknumber (if available).  These pages canbe used to keep a personal inventory of each clothing and accessory item thatyou have.  If you use a highlighter marker (included in this auction) to mark each item as youfind it, items still needed will be easy to see and to add to your ‘shoppinglist’.  As an outfit is completed, yourinventory page will show ‘all blue or other highlighter color’ for that outfit/version.  Do youwish that you had an efficient way to label your 8” Betsy outfits?  ALSO included (in the back pocket of thenotebook) are the same outfits for the 8” Betsy doll printed on 8 peel-and-stick pages.  For my collection, I have each outfit labelstuck on the clear zip lock bag that holds the outfit.  I have included onezip lock baggie, but of course, you will need to use the right sizeof baggie for each outfit.  This size isgood for a dress without a big hat.  Iput the label on the same corner of each baggie for consistency.ALSO, do you ever wish that all of theaccessory items for the 8” Betsy McCall were spread out in table form to helpanswer questions like:  “How manydifferent pairs of white taffeta panties DO I need anyway?!”  The setof pages (separate tab in Tab C) complies each8” Betsy accessory in table form foryou to use as a quick reference to actually see HOW MANY of eachcolor of shoe, panty, sandal, or other accessory you need to collect if you aretrying for ALL of the vintage 8” Betsy’s outfits. You cando as I do, and use a highlighter marker to indicate each item by outfit namethat you already have, then highlight it as it is purchased. PLUS: Manytimes you will purchase a Betsy in need of repair.  Tab D contains repair instructions and suggestions specificto the problems that you will run into as you collect the 1957-1963 hardplastic 8” Betsy Mc Call doll and have each been successfully developed andused over the years by myself (with a lot of help from my husband) and a fewsuggestions from my Betsy friends.
