Pair case repeater watch and 2 movements in the Guildhall Museum
Verge pair cased Watch in the London Museum.
Britten`s states:-he came here through the revocation of the Edict of Nantes;
becoming eventually ric...h enough to build Grove Hall Hammersmith.
An advert appearing in "The Daily Courant" Nov. 16th.1705 stated a silver watch
"lost between Covent Garden and Leicester Fields on Nov 14th.,
Whoever brings said watch to Mr.S. De Charmes, Watchmaker , at his House the Sign of The Clock,
the corner of Warwick Street, Charing Cross,
shall have 2 guineas Reward."
A huge sum at the time!
A Very Good and rare English
Solid Silver
Fusee Verge 1/4 Repeater Pocket Watch
Early 18th. Century
Having lain in a drawer these past 40 years, no story a fact.
Good balance, good clicks.
I have given it one wind and it started ticking.
It does stop after a few seconds but the staff is good and I see no reason
why it shouldn't` work well after a service.
By pushing down the pendant the hammers repeat on the bell as they should.
Not serviced nor timed by me.
Early set up for the fusee.
Broad foot to the cock .
Cherub to the cock table as often seen on the work of Graham.
White enamel dial free from cracks with Beetle & Poker hands
Most likely an improvement to the no doubt original
Champleve dial. It is fitted correctly and not some bodge up.
Lovely matching solid silver cases.
The outer case now with a fitted William Third of England solid silver coin dated 1696.
Perhaps a specific, later in hindsight, request of the owner or subsequent owner.
It actually looks very smart and certainly of the period.
It`s a very rare item, work by this maker appears in the book
"The English Watch" by Terence Camerer Cuss
plates 83 and plate 100
