Longines introduced the 13ZN (featured on the cover of HODINKEE Magazine Vol. 4) in 1936, which – over time – has become one of the most iconic chronograph movements ever. The success of the 13ZN beget further creations such as the 30CH and 530 calibers. The caliber 538, which is fitted in the current example, is a modified iteration of the 30CH movement, without the subsidiary dial at nine o'clock, and was the last of the brand's in-house chronograph movements from this er...a.What sets this watch apart is clearly the unique chronograph hand that can measure up to 1/10 of a second at a glance. The Nonius name comes from a measuring tool invented in 1542 by the Portuguese mathematician Pedro Nunes. The curved extension on the chronograph hand has a scale that measures from zero to nine – accurately depicting the same concept used for a Nonius – with a quadrant divided by concentric circles, allowing the outermost edge to be divided into 90 intervals over 90 degrees. Simply put, the curved scale on the chronograph hand is laid out so that whichever digit from zero to nine that aligns perfectly against one of the hashes on the outer track would indicate the exact 1/10 of a second within that marker.Watch is running, winds and time sets as it should.
