This wonderful piece of Qing Dynasty silk embroidery features almost exclusive use of the "Peking Knot" or "Forbidden Stitch" with what might be a Chrysanthemum in the center with floral sprigs and vines surrounding it. One of the blossoms seems to be intentionally the Ying Yang symbol. There are other curious objects presented like beans, delicate vines and abstract leaves. The work is almost all done in shades of blue with a coppery silk background. The piece ...is framed in an equally old hand woven border. It is currently matted with cream and gold colored mattes and mounted behind glass in a modern manner with a hanging wire on the reverse (one clip is missing). The overall size of the framed piece is 15.5" x 14". The fabric piece is slightly wedge shaped and is 8 1/8" wide at the bottom and 9" wide at the top. Its height is 7 1/4". The piece is in reasonably good condition with just a few loose outlining threads and two small, almost unnoticeable frayed spots in the background. I think the piece dates to 1850 or earlier.
