Timex Sinclair ZX81 TS1000 Kit computer. Mostly working - see discussion below. NO AC Adapter, books or software. Computer only.
I owned one of the these in 1981-2. I removed the modulator and installed a composite video buffer amplifier of my ow...n design in it's place. (I built several video amplifiers and installed them for friends.) Shortly thereafter, added a Texas Instruments TI-99/4 keyboard and put the whole unit in a custom made aluminum case. (The TI-99/4 keyboards were available all over the surplus market in the mid-1980's, and the wiring hookup was very easy.) I gave it away to a collector perhaps 20 years ago.
I tested the ZX81 with my bench power supply set to 8.5 volts DC. The regulator puts out 5 volts DC. Had a heck of time getting a monitor with an analog TV tuner for Channel 2 or 3. (That's why I replaced the modulator in the one I owned back in 1981.) I could see a cursor in the lower left corner of the screen with a "K" inside it - that seemed right. Please see the monitor photos. I could press the keyboard and the cursor changed to a command. Screen hard to read, lots of snow - I don't know it this my setup, or due to a problem with the modulator. You have been warned.
The CPU is a NEC D780C.
The case has some minor scratches, please the top and bottom photos.
Please note the Keyboard ribbon cable is cracked due to age - please see the arrow in the photo pointing to the crack.
The membrane keyboard has 3 pieces of tape on each side. Can be seen in the photo. I don't know why they are there - I did not remove them.
I can't find the screws to the ZX81. I've included a few screws which "may" be for the ZX81, but I don't know.
Please also note the kit builder installed the CHANNEL 2/3 switch on the wrong side of the circuit board.
The kit builder also taped a piece of plastic to the circuit board under the ground connector/strap.
This is for use in the USA, circuit board is marked ISSUE ONE. Has the 2 sockets for 512 byte RAM. (Later versions have a larger socket for a single 1 Kb. RAM.)
Net weight is 12.4 ounces/350 grams. Shipping weight 2 pounds.
Note: If ebay charges your State's Sales Tax, I do not see it. The tax is handled entirely by ebay. I can not refund it. You will have to contact ebay, and/or your State's Tax Authority.
