Vintage - Early 20th Century Texas Handmade Blanket Box/Trunk - World War I?

This antique trunk is in excellent condition considering the age which I believe to be 80 - 100 years old. Measures 38 x 20" x 15"Interior tray is 2 1/2" deep. Material is oak or pine but not cedar.There is some chipping on the bottom but otherwise the wood is in good shape inside and out. Corners are reinforced with metal. Handles are heavy metal/iron. There is no key. I believe this piece may have been a military chest and, if so, would likely have come from the WWI judging from... the age of the owner who died in 1961 I did research the name of the owner for descendants who might be interested in the piece and all seem to be deceased. Painted on the side is owner's name and Dallas, Texas. There are a couple of paintings by the owner on the inside of the lid as well.
