ASTLEY'S109 JERMYN StMADE BY HAND
You are bidding on a real looker - an early ASTLEY'S of 109 JERMYN ST estate pipe. This beautifully preserved Astley has some of the finest grain I have seen on any British briar short of high end Charatans. If I were to hazard a guess, I would say that this was most likely carved for Astley's famous shopfront by James Upshall Pipe Co, still headed at the time by Barry Jones himself. As a long time collector of Charatans and Upshalls, the shap...ing, finish and grain leave me little doubt. Astley pipes being only ever stamped with their own logo, it is of course, impossible to say with absolute certainty. But I struggle to believe that any other carver could have procured such perfection in briar in those days.The condition is great throughout with only minimal darkening along the rim. The deep reddish finish remains vibrant. As you can see from the photos, the original stem, sporting crisp Astley's stamping, has no tooth marks. Since most pipes I choose to list have significant historical value - in addition to being excellent smokers - my philosophy of restoration is always to preserve as much of their original beauty and character as possible. In other words, do no harm. The stems you see in my photos might not be quite as glittery as some others, but you can rest assured that I have not altered the shape of the vulcanite, flattened the button, or buffed away precious stamping. I would rather have a small tooth indentation on the mouthpiece of my 1932 Dunhill Root, than have a rounded bit or a worn down dot. A few scratches on the rim of a 1920s Loewe are not laziness on my part - it would be fairly easy to sand them out and hide the deed in new stain. No, I keep them because they tell a story in briar of the former lives of the pipe and its owners.
