This vintage English candy tin held "Mackintosh's Quality Street Chocolates & Toffees" was made by John Mackintosh & Sons, Halifax, England. With the lid’s florid depiction of a lady in crinolines and her gentleman friend in military uniform, and the sides depicting a boy with a hoop, it was already harking back to Napoleonic times (the late 1800s into the early 1900s). The tin is in excellent condition for age The origins of the lady and gent, whose image sold the choco...lates for decades is surprising. They are in fact characters from a stage play called Quality Street and written by J.M. Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan. Apparently the play inspired the sweet makers Mackintosh so much that they named their new chocolates after it. This box is an original from 1936 - 1940Diameter: 23 cm. (9.05") Height: 15, 5 cm.
