ANTIQUE 1858 LARGE FOLIO " THE SURPRISE " CURRIER AND IVES HAND - COLORED LITHOGRAPH
Item History & Price
Original Antique 1858 Currier & Ives
"THE SURPRISE"
Large Folio, Hand-Colored Lithograph on woven paper
This rare Currier & Ives artwork was created by Leonard Maurer (1832-1932) and printed by Currier & Ives in 1858. As one of the first Currier & Ives' (formally created in 1857) large folio (approx. 29" x 21" inches), the subject matter was intended to assure east coast residents that the "savage" American Indians are b...eing controlled and "taken care of." This artistic narrative was a powerful message at the time and, perhaps, an even more powerful message today given the history of what would become to the American Indian. The piece is "Entered According to Act of Congress in the Year 1858, by Currier & Ives, in the clerk's office of the District Court of the Southern District of New York."
The piece, in my memory, has always been in this frame and will remain in the frame for this listing and shipping; to be honest, I am afraid to try and remove it. The backing is odd in that it is two materials and held in with hand-forged square head nails. A close look at the image shows what looks like a mild shadow over the right third of the artwork. After much scrutiny, I have concluded that this is a darkening from some type of exposure (perhaps sunlight given my knowledge of where it hung in my grandparent's home) over the years. I had never noticed this "shadow-like" shading in the past but am sure that is what it is. The piece could, and should, be kept as is but may also be restored.

ABOUT THE SELLER:I have been on ebay for over 18 years and have NEVER had anegative feedback. I am not a store orbusiness using ebay as a means of expanding my market. I simply enjoy auctions and estate sales and thenselling on ebay. I find it to be anenjoyable hobby during retirement – finding great items and doing research. I have never used a fictitious user to bidagainst my own items (Something that really annoys me about ebay as it isapparent they do not monitor these situations very well).PAYMENT:For the protection of both the buyerand seller, PayPal is the only accepted payment method. Payment is duewithin three days of an auction end. If for some reason you need more time than this, just contact me and I am sure we can work something out.
SHIPPING:Shipping is ALWAYS through the United States Post Office. Having been an avid Ebayer in thepast, I have found this to be the most efficient way of handling shipping and the most reasonable charges. Please remember that shipping and handlingcharges may include proper shipping materials, bubble envelopes, packing tape, insurance, delivery confirmation, etc. All my items ship within 24 hours of received payment and combined shippingwill be utilized whenever possible at the rate of the highest shipping charge(please remember, USPS has a weight limit for first class delivery).I will ship internationally to some countries but PLEASE contact me before bidding or purchasing an item so that arrangements can be made and confirmed.
