For additional pictures Click on "See Full Description" This Military, Zippo Vietnam Service Zippo is in great ConditionThis fantastic 2-sided Zippo was made in 1972 for the USS Asheville (PGM-84/PG-84). The front of the lighter has the silhouette of the Gunboat, and the back has the reproduction of their Squadrons logo: Costal Squadron Three “Checkmate” The Asheville was an Asheville-class gunboat acquired by the U.S. Navy for the task of high-speed patrolling in shallow waterway...s. The Asheville arrived at Camranh Bay in South Vietnam on (my Birthday) 7 May 1967. Upon her arrival, she began an extended deployment to the western Pacific Ocean lasting just over eight years. During the first six years of the deployment, the gunboat served with the Coastal Surveillance Force in Vietnam. During her line periods, she conducted blockade missions—codenamed Operation Market Time—along the South Vietnamese coast in an attempt to interdict the waterborne flow of arms and supplies from North Vietnam to the communist forces operating in South Vietnam. As a secondary mission, the warship provided gunfire support for American and South Vietnamese forces operating ashore. The Gunboat finally departed the Western Pacific on 21 June 1974, bound for the United States. She arrived at San Diego, California, on the 16th. The Gunboat USS Asheville earned 14 battle stars for service in the Vietnam War. For your enjoyment, I have included a picture of her on patrol off the Coast of Vietnam. The lighter is in great used condition. The graphics are sharp and clear on both sides. It is complete with its original insert with a strong spring and the lid is tight.
