This spectacular Reedand Barton sterling silver carving set is from my mother's wedding silverservice from 1942. In the heavily embellished Francis I pattern, the fork is 8 5/8" and the knife 10 3/8". The set was used only for specialoccasions and so these servers are in very good condition, with no dents ormajor scratches, and just surface wear which could be buffed out. The Fork shows minimal wear and the knife only evidence of sharpening, as shown. They havebeen cleaned ...and polished by hand, only. The fork has the Mirrorsteel stamp and the knife, Reed & Barton and Superstainless on the blade. These pieces are not monogrammed.Reed &Barton Francis I Design from 1907:This Renaissance-Baroque-inspired designremains one of the most popular Reed & Barton flatware styles. ThreeAmerican Presidents (Wilson, Truman, and Eisenhower) have ownedthe Francis 1st tableware pattern. It was designed by Ernest Meyer, aFrench silversmith. His goal was to create a pattern that eclipsed the splendidRenaissance-Baroque metalwork of Benvenuto Cellini, court artist andsculptor in the court of King Francis I who ascended the French throne in 1515.It took him three years to design. The pattern is unique, given that - unlikeother flatware patterns - it has fifteen different fruit-and-flower clusters. Each handle bears one of these detailed designs. It has been claimed thatthe design idea came from one of the many tableware patterns of the Italiansilver manufacturer Cesa 1882.
