Important Antique 18th Century C1780 Salem Mass Chippendale Oxbow Slant Lid Desk
Item History & Price
Powerful, authentic Massachusetts Chippendale Oxbow slant front desk of the period, late 18th Century, c.1780-1790 with very nice interior, fabulous claw and ball feet, fan-carved drop, stepped interior with inlaid prospect door with drawers behind. Early, if not original oval brasses. Figured mahogany primary wood throughout, with white pine secondary woods. Hand dovetailed case, drawers, interior drawers. Hand chamfered drawer bottoms, etc. Heavily refinished. Drawer side top edges f...lat. Distinctive carved knees and claw and ball feet, fan and oxbow shaping indicates high likelihood of Salem, MA origins. Quality and history of piece leads to possible attribution to Sanderson brothers, possibly Elijah Sanderson based on similar carvings on documented Sanderson pieces. The Sanderson brothers are recognized as among the very best cabinetmakers in American history. Claw and ball feet demonstrate great strength and power in the grasping claws.
