WHITING STERLING TEAPOT & STAND c1875 - JAPANESE - CHARLES OSBORNE DESIGNER
A very fine and very rare, c1875 Whiting Silversmiths sterling silver tea kettle on matching stand, with the
original burner, in
the Japanese taste.
Completely hand decorated.
Clearly the design work of Charles Osborne, Chief designer at Whiting from 1871-1878, and after a brief tenure at Tiffany, returned to Whiting from 1888-1915.

Tapering square with in-swept "cushion" shoulders and extended petal gadrooning.
Beautifully detailed, bright cut engraved Japanese leaf, and flower,
geometric medallion and star burst displays.The engraving "facet cut" in places resulting in a shimmering light effect.Cover retain the original shell framed bud and globe finial.
Smooth surface spout and tapering overhead swing handle, this providesstriking visual contrast with the Japanese decoration which surrounds.Matching stand with beautifully pierced inverted shell cap, streaming floral, flower head flanked basket decorated supports.Center secure original burner.Conforming Japanese inspired medallion and floral work to in-swept corner base.
Never monogrammed.
This c1875 Whiting Japanesque tea kettle on stand is 13 1/2 inches tall tohandle and weighs a touch over 67 standard ounces.
In fine condition.
Tea kettle interior clean as if never used.
Rich sterling throughout.
Retains original detail.Cover closes flush.Mill tarnish spots, mostly lower bodyand 2 fasteners gone from one support, only visible under base, stillsupports kettle fine.
