Original Description:
I am pleased to offer a very rare original postcard showing the White Star Liner Britannic (1) on trooping duty at Melbourne. Painted in white livery shown here, she actually made just two voyages to Australia during the Boer War - her limited coal carrying capacity made her highly unsuitable for such a long voyage. By contrast, she made 10 trips to Cape Town.I believe her Captain would have been E J Smith later of Titanic fame. By this time she was already surplus to the White Star f...leet having made her last Atlantic voyage in August 1899. She was retired in July 1903. Postally used with Queen Victoria stamps 1904.
