Intriguing antique 19th century (c1860s) original oil pastel painting. A remarkable piece depicting a forest landscape complete with a moon lit lake and figures passing on a boat. Medium is oil pastels on paper done in a Realist style. A very well done piece with no signature that I can not however I have not removed from the frame to examine the reverse side; definitely done by a very talented mystery artist and quite worthy of further research. My assumption i...s that this is a New England scene, presumably central or eastern Massachusetts.
In Excellent overall condition. Clean, bright and vibrant with minimal if any loss of pastel to the glass. No holes, rips or tears; very well preserved. Protected behind glass, matted and framed in its original antique gold gesso and wood frame. A tremendous frame in as is condition however due to the fragility of the gold gesso. Exivits many chips and missing pieces to the gesso. Whenever the frame is handled small pieces of the gesso will fall off so do expect to find some more small chipped pieces when unpacking. Frame has velvet exterior matting and is backed with its original pine board backing and square head nails. Some warping to bottom reverse pine panel as well as small tear to paper backing which is visible through the rear of frame. No rips or tears to the actual painting. Displays handsomely!
Painting measures 21” x 8 1/4”. Frame measures 32 3/4” x 18 3/4”.
