This is a vintage Chinese c. 1950's hand carved wooden stand used for either ikebana (traditional Japanese flower arranging) or bonsai. It is made of a super hard and durable rosewood known as hung-mu. It has hand carved double peaches on every side (see picture 5). The stand is made with all intricately mitered corners.. Great skill was required to achieve such fine craftsmanship. In China, peaches symbolized immortality or the wish for a long and healthy li...fe. Double peaches are an even more auspicious symbol, meaning especially successful and lucky.For over a half century it was well used, yet well loved. With exception to a small separation of wood (see picture 11) and its warm aged patina, this stand remains in fine original condition. Still very sturdy and rock solid.This bonsai or flower stand measures 7 3/4" squared by 4 1/4" tall (19.7 x 10.8 cm).
