Up for auction with No Reserve is a IMPORTNT 1778 GEORGIAN HESTER BATEMAN STERLING SILVER ARMORIAL TEA CADDY JAR BOX. The Tea Caddy is one of the finest and most important examples I have personally sold. The Tea Caddy is fully Hallmarked for the Queen of Silversmith Hester Bateman along with the Date Letter for 1778. The Tea Caddy features very fine hand etched designs throughout and a superb original Family Armorial Crest which is well worth looking into. The Tea Caddy also features a most unusual finial to top handle.
As you can see I found a very similar example that brought $6500 at one the large auction houses and I am told others have sold for more, but this beauty will sell to the high bidder without reserve !
Condition : The jar is in overall excellent condition for the age with one tiny dint mark and it seems to be missing a key so I can not test the lock. There is also one nut missing from the finial inside but it is very secure anyway. The inside has most of the original tin paper lining.
Size : The Box is a wonderful size for use and display measuring 4-1/2 inches long by 3-5/8 inches wide and sitting 4-1/4 inches tall. The Caddy weighs 429 grams being quite thick Sterling Silver throughout.
