'The ex-voto painting is a tradition of folk art that acts as a tribute to divine intervention in personal calamities, as well as an inadvertent catalogue of human misfortune. ... The “ex-voto” — Latin for, roughly, “from the vow”.
...tyle="font-size: 18.6667px;">Remarkable and rare ex-voto painting on oak panel of a man in chains standing over a water pitcher, presumed to be John the Baptist. The painting is dated 1746 on the right hand side under an inscription that needs research. It is housed in it's original heavy oak case and was perhaps hung in a church in the mid 18th century. The darker part at the top of the main picture is the just the shadow from the top of the oak case.
A removable glass panel slides in front of the painting and is held in place with an iron pin (see photo). The glass looks old, I'm not sure if its the same date as the painting.
The painting is in good condition, there are some small losses and flaking, in my view very much part of it's unique quality.
This is a heavy item and whilst I will make every effort possible to ensure it is as well packed I'm afraid I cannot be responsible for the glass although I will try my best. You are welcome to collect in person.
