This really beautiful and exquisite bronze piece is very old and based on the patina most like its from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Unlike most Lobi bracelets (3 rattles), this has 5 rattles or bells. Originally, I believed it used to have 6, but over time it lost one of the bells, hence 5. I wish I knew the complete story of this piece how it lost one of its bells.
Based on the ancient Lobi oral traditions, bracelets such as these are used to ward off evil spi...rits. They said the evil spirits are afraid of the sound it makes. Women would normally wear these bracelets as they perform their homely duties. Sometimes these items are also used as currency to barter and trade.
The Lobi migrated into Burkina Faso from present day Ghana in the 18th century in search of uncultivated lands. The Lobi art is very distinctive to different objects carved to embody religious ideals and beliefs. Bateba (figures) are recognized as living beings, which are placed on the shrines of thila (supernatural spirits) and are able to communicate with one another and to fight off witches.
