Antique Wooden African Yoruba Fetish Statue from Benin. Roughly 11" tall.I used to work at USIS in Cotonou, Benin. I was involved in a fair number of cultural exchanges and learned a bit about regional culture and religion. I was fortunate enough to meet the King of Ketou in person and was given two cherished pieces from him, personally.
This piece was not one of them, (I am too attached to them), but came from my boss, who was also a student of Yoruba and Fon cultures. His collecti...on was authentic and impressive and I was honored by this gift when I left my posting. He had mounted it himself. Sadly, I am downsizing as I move toward retirement so I must let things go.
It is in good shape for the age, probably from the 1930s, but it is hard to date them precisely as the same families pass the craft down from one generation to the next. It is very old, though. I have owned it for 25 years myself. The crack in the back of the head and back has been there since I owned it. I suspect the wood was too green when carved. Still a fabulous piece.
