export record in selling machines to virtually every country in the world.
To mark this, in around 1890, the Company issued a series of trade cards
showing its machines with customers in native dress. Each card features people from a different country dressed in traditional clothing and posing with Singer sewing machines. The rich color and high level of detail in the chromolithographs... make these images endearingly engaging while the accompanying text provides insight into contemporary discourse on race, ethnicity, consumerism and industrialization. Some countries have a card for the male costume and one for the female costume.
The rear of the card extols Singer’s export record and gives some detail of the
country being supplied.
