About the Artist: Jules E. Scheffer was born in Tjimahi, West Java in the Dutch West Indies. As a boy he explored the jungles where he was born and raised. He photographed exotic birds and hunted wild boar. His love of nature which began in that faraway land has never deserted him. When the Japanese attacked Java in 1942, his father arranged for him to enter Royal Dutch Air Force in Australia. He was then shipped to the United States for pilot training. After the war he move to the United States and became a citizen in 1950. In his early years as an up and coming artist he painted "artist-concepts" for architects all over the United States. As he grew older, his efforts turned to depicting his favorite wildlife with such realism and sensitivity, that they seem to come alive on his canvas. He also became adept at painting with a pallet knife in his later years. Some of his most famous works were created using that media.
