Antique Heavy Brass Jam Kettle Preserves Cook Pot Forged Iron Handle 10” Diam.Heavy spun brass, with hand forged steel handle applied to the body with copper rivets. 100 years ago every housewife made jams and jellies as it was the only way to preserve summer fruit. The brass reacts to acidic substances so they weren't used for pickles and chutneys and rarely for ordinary cooking. Apparently, the jam leeches a little of the copper out of the brass alloy during cooking and this helped... prevent mold in finished jellies, jams and preserves. The family was usually sent out into lanes and fields to pick the fruit, blackberries and bilberries even rose hips. Most fruit has lots of vitamin C, particularly rose hips which were made into jelly and spoon fed to babies and infants. Sadly, WWII rationing of sugar and freezers made most Jam Pots redundant but they will also make good log pots, fruit bowls or plant holders too. Truly, a rare find. This will clean up beautifully!Beautiful solid brass preserves pot weighing in at over twelve pounds. Dates to the 1800’s. Very cool for decoration or for use when canning jam, jellies and preserves.
