A full history of the Hindenburg can be found on line on Wikipedia but it is the airship's final moments that caught the world's attention on May 6th 1937 when it crashed in Manchester Township, New Jersey, USA. The German passenger airship caught fire and was destroyed while trying to dock with its mooring mast Naval Air Station Lakehurst. Images of the disaster were captured on newsreels providi...ng perhaps on the the most iconic images of the twentieth century. The photographs even ended up on the cover of Led Zeppelin's first album.
This is a piece of the wreckage. It measures about 11cms across at its widest point. This was in a long term reputable collection and recently came to market. It is marked Hindenburg in black pen, from that collection.
