This is a very unusual kabuki text from Osaka, with color woodblock prints from Osaka on its front and back overs, and the inside of its front cover. The prints are in the style of Hirosada, a mid-19th century Kamigata artist. The text appears to be titled Sugawara Denju: Terakoya no Dan, or The Legend of Sugawara [Michizane]: The Story of the Temple School. (Michizane is the patron god of students.) It was printed in Osaka.
This is a long text, in distinctiv...e kabuki script (fancifully rounded characters). The book has 55 numbered leaves (110 pages.) There are 4 koban color prints on the front cover, showing actors in roles, a single sheet (signed Yoshi**) on the inner cover, with four insets, and finally two rectangular panels on the back cover, showing stage scenes.
The prints on the covers, as you might expect, are rubbed and have losses. The print inside the cover was better protected, and is full and complete.
Unusual item. Would possibly be of interest to a Kamigata print collector, as this has both an Osaka kabuki text, and a variety of Osaka color prints.
