Rare Locality MAGNESIOCHROMITE In Serpentine - - Red Pit Mine, Pennsylvania - -
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:19776835 |
I had never heard of the Red Pit mine in Pennsylvania and wa...s happy to get this piece as part of a large lot of minerals that I purchased from a very old Phoenix collection. The specimen shows black magnesiochromite grains in a yellowish green serpentine. The Red Pit mine was apparently quite an operation at one time but an underground explosion on the 400 foot level in 1868 apparently sealed its doom and no production has taken place since that time. At one point, it was second only to the famous Woods Chrome mine in terms of tons of chromite produced. At the time of its operation, the chromite was being used as a yellow paint pigment.
