16mm Sound Feature Film Classic Three1600ft Reels of 16mm Sound Film Academy Award NomineeMASTERPIECE Algiers (1938)Directed byJohn CromwellAlgiers is stunning film on many different levels thatcarries an unusual originality for the time period. The romantic chemistrybetween Hedy Lamarr (Gaby) Charles Boyer (Pepe)is perhaps one of the movie'smost fascinating and unusual aspects. But what really makes things shine is thebrilliant black and white cinematog...raphy of James Wong Howe.
There are also many different one liners and camera shots inthis film that have become famous over the years and it's fun just looking forthings that you've heard or seen before.
Anyway, Algiers is a grand piece of entertainment well worththe watching. Otherpeople have described the plot, the setting, and the great photography, so Iwill skip that. Boyer is excellent here. His persona is completely believableto me,
The movie is made even more appealing by the secondarycharacters. Gene Lockart's informer is well acted. Joseph Calleia does a greatjob as the "native" detective who has easy access to the Casbah.Sigrid Gurie is great as the jealous courtesan. Alan Hale Sr. is great as thewitty erudite criminal. The rough fellow who always says "OK" wasfun. I also enjoyed the slim bodyguard dressed in white who never saidanything; not sure which actor this is.
Which brings us to the main reason to see thismovie. Hedy Lamarr.
What can I say? "Wow" is hardly sufficient. Of allthe beautiful actresses there have been, of all the kinds of beauty -- cute, girl-next-door, classic, sultry, innocent, exotic, hot, mysterious, haughty, bombshell, va-va-voom, ethereal -- Hedy Lamarr had the best. This is pure humanfemale beauty. And it's not just some portrait or statue. She speaks, shesmiles, she moves. There are at least three scenes of conversations withCharles Boyer that I just can't watch often enough. It is a must forany 16mm film collector of Masterworks. Academy Awards, USA 1939 Nominee
