Wallace was the first American manufacturer to produce German Silver (aka Nickel Silver) in the United States. He started his firm in 1833 and it was renamed in 1855 to R. Wallace and Co. when he founded a partnership with Samuel Simpson. In 1871, Robert Wallace incorporated another new company called, Wallace Brothers. This company continued until it ceased operations in 1879. Thus, thi...s trinket box dates to the period between 1871-1879.
Nickel Silver is a silver-white alloy made of between 52-89% copper, 10-35% zinc and 5-35% nickel. It is a durable alloy which has a Silver appearance, making it a desirable alloy to use in the 1800’s for a variety of pieces.
This piece measures 2 1/2” x 7” x 2 1/2”.
