Although Fiesta was introduced in the late 1930s, the four "Fifties Colors" were not introduced until about October of 1951. It was an effort by Homer Laughlin China to update the Fiesta line to make it more contemporary with the Mid Century Modern style that was coming into it's ascendancy. The fifties colors, chartreuse, forest green, rose and gray, were only produced for eight years, being discontinued in 1959. The short production run, combined with the lackluster... sales during the run make the fifties colors the rarest of all Fiesta vintage colors except "medium green" that was introduced in 1959. Of the four fifties colors, the gray pieces, particularly the larger pieces, are generally the hardest to find.
(One accomplished Fiesta collector wrote to me to object to my using the word "rare" in regard to the gray water pitcher. We agreed however that they are "hard-to-find". I mention it here as he was concerned that I might be misleading a new collector and that is the last thing I would want to do.)
This piece, although far from perfect, took me several years of searching to find. I paid over $75 for it but I admit I might have overpaid. Its color is even and lustrous but it has a "necklace" of 4 fleabites and 1 chip under its spout and a second small, but visible chip at the back of the top rim. Fortunately for the overall look of this pitcher, the chip on the rim is more visible than are the 5 damages on the underside of the spout. There is also a hint of an under-glaze hairline running across the top of the spout. The hairline is barely visible but is more detectable when ringing (tapping) the pottery for the sound.
The pitcher stands 7 1/2 inches high, 8 inches long, and 4 3/4 inches wide.
The pitcher looks terrific on our sideboard in the dining room and I love it. But I have to downsize our household as we a planning a move to an apartment where there will be no room to accommodate the sideboard.
