North Vietnamese (Socialist Republic) medal showing the North Vietnamese flag and the date 5.8. The medal is in commemoration of the first US aircraft shot down over North Vietnam. The event occurred on that day in 1964. The plane was piloted by navy Lieutenant Everett Alvarez, Jr. He was 26 years of age when captured and was not released until 1973.The medal was awarded to those members of the North Vietnamese defence forces who were credited with shooting down an aircraft.
