Here we have a MUST HAVE and IMPOSSIBLE to Find a Civil War GENERAL ORDER No. 39 for Funeral Directors/Embalmers to add to your collection...It is dated March 15, 1865 and deals with "EMBALMERS" and states "That no person will be permitted to embalm or remove bodies of deceased officers or soldiers, unless acting under the special license of the PROVOST MARSHALL of the Army, Department or District in which the bodies may be. Thi...s order is actual the FIRST TIME THAT persons must have the skill and ability as embalmers in order to receive a "LICENSE to EMBALM"!!!! In my opinion this is the 1st time that persons must OBTAIN A LICENSE to EMBALM"!!!! This general order was issued by the Secretary of War and signed by E.D. TOWNSEND, Assistant Adjutant General!! Would look OUTSTANDING FRAMED!!! Measures about 4 3/4" x 7" with no damage and slight browning (but not bad at all). No Folds!!! Would look great in a frame next to Present Day EMBALMING LICENSE or FUNERAL DIRECTOR LICENSE!! Selling as is with NO RESERVE!!! MAKE AN OFFER if you wish as I feel you will never find another one!!
